Always keep the following items in you vehicle in case you’re involved in an accident:

- pen and paper for taking notes, along with phone numbers of all local law enforcement agencies

- disposable camera with film pre-loaded (this is an inexpensive item that is more reliable than a cell phone camera which might be damaged in a crash)

- a laminated notecard with medical information for all persons using the vehicle

  • medications
  • allergies
  • name, phone number and address of physicians
  • any special medical information or care instructions

- flashlight

Emergency flares and safety triangles should be kept in the trunk at all times.

After an accident, call law enforcement and assess the well being of all passengers.  Do not attempt to move anyone that is unconscious or appears to have a neck or back injury (unless the victim is in imminent danger due to hazard of fire or traffic); wait for trained medical professionals to arrive .

If possible, move the involved vehicles to the side of the road and set out safety flares and triangles.

Once professional help arrives, ensure the responders are aware of any special medical needs or allergies for those needing treatment.

Be certain to record the important details of the accident:

  • date/time
  • location
  • Full names of all parties, license plate numbers, vehicle makes and models, insurance carriers
  • conditions at time of accident (pre existing accident, weather, etc.)

Ask the law enforcement official responding to the scene to provide you with a copy of the accident report.

Seek medical treatment for all injured parties.

If anyone has been seriously hurt and is suffering from a broken bone, lacerations or back/neck injuries, contact a qualified accident attorney right away.
